Meet the many Fraggle faces of Kyle Firsch!
Say hello to Kyle Frisch, first-time submitter, first-time printed Threadless artist! Kyle’s design, 30 Fraggle Faces, is the grand prize winner of the Fraggle Rock Challenge!
Holy cow! Your very first submission was not only printed but won the whole Fraggle Rock challenge! How does it feel?
It’s pretty incredible to win a challenge with my first submission! My highest hope when entering was that my design might get printed if I was lucky, but I never thought I’d win. It’s kind of a surreal experience!
What drew you to this challenge?
I’ve been a Muppet fan for years, but for various reasons I didn’t enter the Muppets or Sesame Street challenges back in the day. I didn’t want to let the opportunity to do a design based on one of Jim Henson’s worlds pass me by entirely, so I made sure not to miss out on the Fraggle Rock challenge when it rolled around!
Why did you decide to feature so many faces in your design instead of just focusing on one character?
Fraggle Rock was a show that was all about connections. A huge focus of the show was how the Fraggles, Doozers, Gorgs, and so on were all connected and dependent on each other, even if they didn’t realize it themselves. To me, it seemed like the best way to represent that idea was to make sure that many different characters from the show were all represented together. And, of course, since it’s the 30th anniversary of Fraggle Rock there really was no other option but to include 30 characters!
Were you a Fraggle Rock fan? Do you have a favorite character?
As I mentioned before, I am a longtime Muppet fan but Fraggle Rock had managed to elude my radar for many years. I was aware of it, but it was only after discovering the show on Netflix a while back that I really got into it for the first time. I’m glad that I’ve finally familiarized myself with the third pillar of the Jim Henson family, so to speak! I have lots of favorite characters, but if I had to just choose one I’d probably go with Wembley. I can definitely relate to his indecisiveness at times!
Describe your process when creating this design.
My process mostly consisted of spending hours on Muppet Wiki reading through character pages and looking for good reference images to work from. Lots of time was wasted perusing articles on that site while creating my design!
